·         Carlos Guillermo Smith, Florida’s first LGBTQ Latino legislator, FL House District 49, will headline our August meeting.  Rep. He is currently Director and Vice-President of U-Store Management Corporation and previously worked for the Federal Trade Commission and was a partner with Fensterwald and Alcorn Professional Company.

We will also have a great opportunity for you to show your support for your Democratic candidates. The Club is contacting many candidates’ campaigns to obtain yard signs.  We will bring those signs to this meeting and hand them out to the attendees while the supply lasts at no charge.  The candidates only ask that you then go to their website and make a donation.

Dunedin Cares Girl Power June Drive

FEMININE CARE PRODUCT DRIVE

The number of families in the USA needing assistance from food pantries continues to increase every year. The lack of access to menstrual health products for people who are either homeless or low-income is appalling. These necessary products are not covered by SNAP or any other welfare program.  Each month, this leaves countless people without the products many of us take for granted.

During the month of June, please help to support Dunedin Cares’ “Girl Power” feminine care product drive by donating maxi pads, mini pads, panty liners and tampons. Or make a monetary donation to Dunedin Cares (cash, check or online) and identify your donation is in support of our “Girl Power” drive. With your help, we can help so many who cannot afford these necessary products.

Coffee with the Counselor: Am I Angry or Anxious?

“What is the connection between anxiety and anger? Why am I so irritable? I don’t want to be so angry, but I can’t help myself. What can I do to have better control of my emotions while facing stressful situations?”

We will explore the answers to these questions and many others that deal with emotional regulation and our ability to express ourselves appropriately when we feel like our emotions are getting the best of us.

Come, relax, and enjoy refreshments and a stress-free night. We will also be talking about our upcoming mental health conference to be held at OLL in September, entitled: Help, Hope and Healing: Mental Health Conference 2022.”

Facilitators: Dolores Mortimer, LMHC, RPT/S, NCC, and Winnie Holland, LMHC

  • Rene Flowers is a representative of Be SMART for Kids, a campaign launched to raise awareness about how secure gun storage—storing guns locked, unloaded, and separate from ammunition—can save children’s lives. Be SMART emphasizes that it’s an adult’s responsibility to keep kids from accessing guns and that every adult can play a role in keeping kids and communities safer. The organization was created to bring together responsible adults to reduce both suicides and the number of unintentional shootings that occur when children have access to unsecured firearms. For more info on Be SMART, visit www.besmartforkids.org
  • Kelly Nelson is the co-founder of the North Pinellas Reproductive Rights Team, now operating as the Tampa Bay Abortion Fund.  Kelly serves with the organization’s advocacy arm, Tampa Bay Access Force, and also sits on the Juvenile Welfare Board North County Community Council.  She will provide an update on abortion rights issues.
  • Jarrod Buchman is the newest member of the Oldsmar City Council.  In the March 2022 municipal elections, Jarrod ran for Oldsmar City Council against a former 2 term mayor and city councilperson. Jarrod won all three precincts, obtaining 55% of the vote in Oldsmar, thereby flipping the city of Oldsmar blue. Upon his swearing-in, Jarrod was appointed to serve as Vice Mayor of Oldsmar. We’re looking forward to hearing from Jarrod about the experience, and his advice for our efforts to elect more Democrats.

We look forward to seeing you in person or via Zoom on Thursday, April 21.
