Robert Burns Supper at the Historic Scottish Hall

Traditional event celebrates birthday of Scottish Poet Robert Burns

January 21, 2017

Available at Celtic Shop of Dunedin or by mail from Scottish American Society, PO Box 2606, Dunedin, FL 34697

Celebrating Scottish poet Robert Burns’ birthday has long been an established tradition for Dunedin’s Scottish American Society members, guests and residents of Pinellas County.  Burns’ Night, held every January in Dunedin’s historic Scottish Hall, is the only Robert Burns’ Supper held in Dunedin.  Historically speaking, the Burns’ Supper was first held in memoriam by Burns’ friends in Scotland following his death in 1796.

At 6:00pm, guests arriving at the 79 year old Scottish Hall on 917 Louden Avenue are greeted by a bagpiper who “pipes them in” to the gaily decorated historic wood structure with walls adorned with over 40 Clan Crests and Scottish memorabilia.   Dinner is served shortly after when guests have been seated.  The centerpiece for the formal dinner is the traditional Scottish dish haggis celebrated by Burns in his Address to a Haggis along with Scotch whiskyThe formal evening follows a standard format beginning with the piping in of guests and ending with toasts and recitations of Burns’ poetry. Open to the public as are all Scottish American Society events, the Burns’ Supper is usually held on or near the poet’s birthday on January 25, 1759. This year’s event will take place on Saturday, January 21st.

Seating is limited so early purchase is advisable.  Tickets are required in advance and cost only $25 for members and $30 for non-members. They may be obtained either at the Celtic Shop of Dunedin on Main Street or directly by mail from the Scottish American Society, PO Box 2606, Dunedin, FL 34697. “We are proud once again to honor Scotland’s national poet and one of the world’s best known literary figures,” said SAS President Diane Burke. “At the same time, we are pleased to publicly celebrate the tradition and ceremony each year with a formal presentation of his life and works,” added Burke. For more information, contact: Harvey Smith at 727-784-4755.
