New Member Spotlight — Crime Stoppers of Pinellas County

DCO is pleased to welcome Crime Stoppers of Pinellas County as a new member. Our good friend and DCO member Alan McHale is the current Coordinator.  Crime Stoppers is a community-based program involving citizens, the media and law enforcement in the fight against crime. Crime Stoppers operates on the principle that someone other than the criminal has information that can solve a crime. You can remain anonymous and you may be eligible for a reward of up to $3000 if your tip leads to an arrest.

The first Crime Stoppers program began in 1976 in Albuquerque, New Mexico as a result of the Homicides of a young gas station attendant. The detective investigating the case had exhausted all leads but was convinced the public had the information that could assist in solving the crime. He approached a local television station asking them to air a reenactment of the crime. He set up an anonymous tip line and offered a reward for information leading to an arrest. As a result, the detective received the tip that led to the arrest of the individuals responsible for this senseless crime. The cooperation between the media, law enforcement and the public played an important role in establishing the first Crime Stoppers program. Today, there are over 1200 Crime Stoppers organizations worldwide.Continue reading

Community Memorial Day Service Monday, May 28

The Church of the Good Shepherd invites the entire community to an ecumenical prayer service to honor those who died while serving this country and its allies in the Armed Forces. The Dunedin Highland Middle School Pipe Band performs, and the Color Guard from the Suncoast Sea Cadets presents the flags. The service features a guest speaker and prayers for those who made the ultimate sacrifice, for those in active service, and for veterans, both living and dead. A solemn roll call is read with the names of those on the hearts of the people attending the service.

This year’s officiant and speaker is the Rev. Robert Swick, a priest in the Orthodox Catholic Church. Father Bob serves as a chaplain and veterans advocate in the Bay area, and is Chairman/CEO of the Tampa Bay Veterans Alliance. A lovely reception follows the service.

For more information, contact the Church of the Good Shepherd at 727-733-4125.

Good Shepherd Buys Sunshine Plaza

In a landmark decision to expand one of its core ministries, the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd has purchased the retail facility located at 1714 N. Ft. Harrison, in the nearby Greenwood neighborhood of northwest Clearwater, Fla, appropriately known as Sunshine Plaza.

“We were made up of only a few volunteers when we started. Now we have over 20 volunteers, employ four individuals from the local community and will soon welcome a store manager in the month ahead,” according to Gus Robbins-Penniman, the store’s founder and ministry leader. “Our team picks up donations of furniture and other household items throughout Pinellas County for free and resells them at the shop for modest prices. But more than reselling furniture, we provide hope and a sense of community to a neighborhood that is hungry for both. One of the intangibles provided by this ministry is conversation and compassion. There’s not a day that goes by when someone from the local neighborhood doesn’t stop in just to say hello to a welcoming and supportive group of new friends.”Continue reading
