Pattern Making on Clay: February 19th & 20th

Adrienne Eliades will host the Pattern Making on Clay workshop at the Dunedin Fine Art Center. Adrienne is a studio potter and educator who has studied, taught, and exhibited nationally and internationally.

This workshop is an excellent opportunity to learn from a phenomenal potter and instructor who was named a 2018 Emerging Artist by Ceramics Monthly, and it is for both handbuilders and wheel throwers.

This hands-on workshop introduces pattern decoration techniques and how to embrace vibrant color in clay work. The goal of this workshop is to expand your surface decoration repertoire.

Ages 17 and up. This course is open to all skill levels. Hand-builders and wheel throwers are welcome.

Screaming Orphans

Screaming Orphans

The Scottish American Society of Dunedin is proud to welcome back the Screaming Orphans to kick off our 2022 series of concerts.

The Screaming Orphans, four sisters from County Donegal, Ireland, are a highly talented family and have traveled Europe, America, and Canada, appearing on David Letterman and many other shows. Their 2017 folk album Taproom charted No. 1 on the iTunes World Music Charts and in the Top 10 of Billboard’s World Album Charts. Their 2019 album Life in a Carnival charted on the top 25 of iTunes Pop Music charts in the U.S. and again on the top 10 of the Billboard World Albums Chart.

In 1900, John Singer Sargent was the world’s most celebrated portraitist. His most famous work, Portrait of Madame X, is a treasure of the Metropolitan Museum. Dee’s lecture provides an overview of Sargent’s amazing career. And, in a more in-depth account of the Mme. X story, you’ll learn about Sargent’s goals for the painting, his unusual relationship with his infamous subject, and why the portrait created a firestorm in the Paris art world!

The Byrne Brothers, hailing from Donegal, Ireland, are a multi-award-winning family band, and Irish dancers are currently taking the Irish-American scene by storm! Their achievements include winning the 2022 Young Artist Academy© Award for Outstanding Music Ensemble and being named Rising Stars of the Year 2021 and Best CD Cover of 2021 by American Celtic Radio Listeners for their album “Living the Dream.”​

Each band member is a talented musician and Irish dancer, having won County Champion and Ulster Champion Irish Dancer titles. The band consists of Luca, 19, on accordion; Finn, 17, on banjo, mandolin, and guitar; Dempsey, 14, on bodhran and whistle; and their father, Tommy, on uilleann pipes, fiddle, guitar, and grade 1 bagpiper.

  They will be supported by the Isle of Skye Highland Dancers, who are a big part of the Scottish American Society of Dunedin.

DFAC – Coffee & Conversation – Ezra Johnson

Hanging out, drinking delicious coffee, talking about art… ah, that’s the life! Well, that IS the life at least for an hour or so each month at the Dunedin Fine Art Center’s Coffee and Conversation series. Enjoy coffee (Presented by the Sterling Society of DFAC) and insights as each month’s guest holds forth on their area of expertise.

Ezra Johnson, Associate Professor of Painting & Drawing at USF, will discuss the evolution of his work over the past twenty years. His work centers around painting but includes investigations into sculpture and animation. He will discuss his background and development as an artist, the processes involved in the creation, and what inspires the imagery that he works with.

Ezra Johnson Bio

Ezra Johnson is a painter based in Tampa, Florida. Born in 1975 in Wenatchee, Washington. He received an MFA from Hunter College in New York in 2006 and a BFA from California College of the Arts in San Francisco in 2000. Johnson’s painting practice often expands into animation and sculpture. Interested in experimenting with color, form, and surface, his work takes a playful, energetic approach to serious subject matter.

Johnson has exhibited at many prestigious museums, such as the Nerman Museum of Art in Kansas, the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, the Site Santa Fe Biennial, the ICA in Philadelphia, and gallery exhibitions, nationally and internationally. Johnson is represented by Freight + Volume Gallery in New York and Mindy Solomon Gallery in Miami. Johnson is an Associate Professor of Painting and Drawing at the University of South Florida.

Georgia O’Keeffe: An American Original

Georgia O’Keeffe has been a major figure in American art since the 1920s when she first exhibited her now-familiar abstract flower paintings. In 1946, she made history as the first woman to have a solo exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art. Learn more about this notoriously independent, freethinking artist in a presentation that examines her early career, her legendary partnership with Alfred Stieglitz, and the creative achievements that made her one of the most original artists of the 20th century.

Scotch Whisky Tasting for St Andrew’s Day 2023

In celebration of St. Andrew, the patron Saint of Scotland, we are delighted and excited to welcome back Scotsman Bill Mullen for a very special Whisky Tasting Concert! Originally from Dundee (Scotland), Bill grew up listening to many Scottish Artists. After spending time living in Aberdeen and Europe, Bill and his lovely wife Dorothy moved to Lake Oswego, Oregon, where his friend David Maher offered him a solo gig at Maher’s Irish Pub. Bill has been touring the USA and Canada ever since with his brand of traditional and contemporary Scottish Music.
Bill is also a renowned expert in Scotch Whisky, having conducted many tastings and presentations on the “Water of Life” around the USA and Canada.

Our St Andrew’s Night will open with pipers and then feature the Margaret Howard Highland Dancers and the Isle of Skye Highland Dancers. Then Bill will take over for a great singalong-a-whisky tasting!   There will be an opening toast followed by 4 Single Malt Scotch Whisky tastings from around Scotland.  As usual, there will be some finger food to accompany the Scotch, and for those who would prefer to drink wine or beer, we offer tickets to suit your tastes.

The North Pinellas County Democratic Club will hold its monthly meeting on Thursday, November 16, 2023.  Our in-person meeting will be at the Scottish Cultural Center, 917 Louden Ave in Dunedin. Our meeting starts with social time at 6:30 pm, followed by the business meeting at 7:00 pm. We’ll provide a Zoom link on November 15 for those who wish to join virtually. 

This month, we welcome local candidates to join us. 
We will also receive updates from our District 57 and 58 Chairs on the organization in our districts and where we still need help.  We need you to get involved!

“We will start with a brief history of portraiture and then reflect on my art journey from realism to expressionism. We will discuss my art practice, including some of the tools and techniques I use to paint expressive work. We will briefly touch on what I teach and my involvement with arts in the community. Examples of artwork are included in the presentation.”

 

Jim Gigurtsis Bio

Jim Gigurtsis was born in Crete, Greece, and moved to England as a young adult. In 2016, Jim moved to Seminole, Pinellas County, from Europe. Jim Gigurtsis is an award-winning multi-discipline artist. His preferred medium is oil painting, but he also uses video and installation.

His work is internationally known and can be found in private and public collections in the US, UK, Greece, Canada, and Norway. Since 2011, his work has been shown in numerous solo and group exhibitions in London and the USA. In 2019, he received an Emerging Artist grant from Creative Pinellas. Jim has won several awards, including Best of Show for Pinellas County in 2022.

Jim was the curator for the exhibition space at the Financial Contact Authority in London and advised on their art strategy. He has taught art classes and workshops at the Morean Arts Center, Treasure Island Art Guild, and London, UK. He does demonstrations of portrait painting and also gives private lessons.

Jim is an avid supporter of the arts in the community. He does this by giving free art lessons to individuals and groups that cannot afford it and by supporting worthwhile non-profit organizations, such as the Suncoast Voices for Children and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Tampa Bay.
