Burns Night Whisky Tasting

In celebration of Scotland’s National Bard, Robert Burns, a Whisky Tasting with a difference. You may have been to a Burns Supper before, or you may have been to one of our Whisky Tastings. This promises to be a delightful night with fabulous whiskies to taste together with some of Robert Burns’s finest works in music and poetry. We will also include a sample of Haggis, Neeps, and Tatties, as you would expect on such a night!
For those of you who prefer other libations, we always offer tickets for Beer/Wine drinkers.
We will also feature Piping and Highland Dancing, which will be a truly Scottish Night.
Everyone is welcome; you don’t have to be Scottish to join in. For something a little bit different, come along and join us for a Very Special Scottish Robert Burns Whisky Tasting.

Robert Burns, also known familiarly as Rabbie Burns, was a Scottish poet and lyricist. He is widely regarded as the national poet of Scotland and is celebrated worldwide. After his death, he became a great source of inspiration to the founders of both liberalism and socialism and a cultural icon in Scotland and among the Scottish Diaspora around the world. His poem (and song) “Auld Lang Syne” is sung worldwide at Hogmanay.

The Isle of Skye Highland Dancers 

With over 200 main-stage performances for theaters, festivals, and corporate events, North of Argyll has become one of the most famous Modern Celtic Music bands on the road today. They are a high-energy Celtic Fusion band and will be throwing in some Festive Fun to complement their set. Their show includes foot-stomping music, stories, legends, and humor.  North of Argyll is a touring band performing in the USA, Canada, and Internationally.
They will be supported by the Isle of Skye Highland Dancers, who are a big part of the Scottish American Society of Dunedin.

Scottish American Society of Dunedin – Meeting  – An opportunity to meet the Board and have your say

You are invited to a meeting of members and guests at the Scottish American Society of Dunedin. This is an opportunity to meet and engage with the current Board of Directors.

The Scottish American Society of Dunedin is a member based 501 C 3 Organization whose mission is to promote and perpetuate Dunedin’s rich Scottish Heritage and to continue to preserve the Historic Scottish Cultural Center at 917 Louden Avenue, Dunedin.
The Board is seeking to increase their engagement with the current membership as well as friends and supporters of the Society. They are keen to hear the membership’s views and prepare plans for 2023 based on the views and aspirations of the many rather than the few.

This will be an informal meeting and will be guided to a large extent by those present.

A Fabulous Whisky Tasting  – To Celebrate St Andrew

In celebration of St. Andrew, the patron Saint of Scotland, we are delighted and excited to welcome back Scotsman Bill Mullen for a very special Whisky Tasting Concert! Originally from Dundee (Scotland), Bill grew up listening to many Scottish Artists. After time spent living in Aberdeen and in Europe, Bill and his lovely wife Dorothy moved to Lake Oswego, Oregon, where his friend David Maher offered him a solo gig at Maher’s Irish Pub. Bill has been touring the USA and Canada ever since with his own brand of traditional and contemporary Scottish Music.
Bill is also a renowned expert in Scotch Whisky, having conducted many tastings and presentations on the “Water of Life” around the USA and Canada.

Our St Andrew’s Night will open with pipers and the Margaret Howard Highland Dancers. Then, after the opening toast, Bill will take over for a great singalong-a-whisky tasting!   There will be an opening toast followed by 4 Single Malt Scotch Whisky tastings from around Scotland.  As usual, there will be traditional Scottish food to accompany the Scotch, and for those who would prefer to drink wine or beer or not to partake in alcohol, we offer tickets to suit your tastes.

Yes, there is something for everyone!

The Byrne Brothers in Concert

The Byrne Brothers are one of the most exciting and successful Celtic Bands currently in the USA. They are a Family Band, originally from Dublin, Ireland who moved to Donegal for a few years and now live in Orlando, Florida. Each band member are all County Champions of their Traditional Irish Instruments. Before coming to the USA, they were Duo and Trio Champions and Ulster Champion Irish Dancers. Even their Dad, Tommy, was Dublin Champion on Bagpipes back in the day and now plays with them on Guitar, Uilleann Pipes, Fiddle Whistles, and Bagpipes.
Their Show is fast-paced, with brilliant musicianship on multiple instruments, exciting and dynamic arrangements as well as world-class Irish dancing.

They have performed over 4000 shows throughout Europe and the USA. From the infamous Shamrock Bar, Spain, to Raglan Road, Orlando, playing to audiences seven nights a week.

We have been very fortunate to have been able to book this fantastic duo on several occasions, and they have never failed to delight and entertain our audience. The Celtic Concert Series at the Scottish Cultural Center was created in order to bring the best of Scottish, Irish & Traditional Celtic Music to Dunedin.
The Scottish American Society of Dunedin is a 501 c 3 not-for-profit organization which raises funds to help maintain the Historic Scottish Cultural Center which is approaching 100 years old in 2023. We also raise funds to help subsidize classes in Scottish Arts and to help students who enroll in these classes with scholarships.

Our First Scottish Heritage Day at the Scottish Cultural Center in Dunedin! We’ve got something for all ages from 4+.

About this event

(8 to 10 am) Scottish Storytelling in English and Gaelic, Coloring, fingerprinting, and songs for the young ones!

(10 to noon) Gaelic lesson, Gaelic song, and performance for us!

(Noon to 1 pm) Lunch provided of Scotch eggs, Sausage rolls & crisps. Our bar will be open from noon.

(1 to 5 pm) Genealogy and Scottish history.

Listen to the Band rehearse for the Ukraine Benefit Friday April 29th

Please join us in the Scottish Cultural Center for a fun time featuring the headline band for the Ukraine Benefit, North of Argyll. No Kilts Necessary – this is NOT a dress rehearsal.
With members of the band coming in from out of town, they will be putting their set together for the big day and playing some new and old tunes. This rehearsal is for the band, and it will be a relaxed and fun night.
We are making it a free event and would love to see a full house of our members and friend.
The doors will open at 6:30.

Refreshments will be available for sale, and we will have some fun along the way.

Cadilac Cowboys In Concert! – Get Your Zydeco and Country On

The Scottish American Society of Dunedin is very proud to bring you the Cadillac Cowboys in Concert.
The Cadillac Cowboys are a five-piece band from the Tampa Bay area in Florida, serving up a musical gumbo of Western Swing, Americana, Zydeco, and Bluegrass. This is a departure from our usual fare of the best in Celtic Music, but we are certain this will be a fantastic night with one of the best live bands in Florida.
We will have prizes for the best-dressed man, woman, and couple. get your “Country” on!

Benefit For The People Of Ukraine

There’s a special event happening in our area where you can help make a difference.  On Saturday, April 30th, the City of Dunedin together with the Scottish American Society of Dunedin (where our Club holds its monthly meetings) presents “Benefit For The People of Ukraine: A Celtic Concert”.  The concert will take place at Waterfront Weaver Park on Bayshore Boulevard, Dunedin from 2:00 – 8:00 pm.  Tickets are $10 per person, available via Eventbrite or at the gate.

The Scottish American Society of Dunedin is proud to present a showcase of all the talent who learn and practice their skills at the Scottish Cultural Center.
We will be featuring the dancers of the Isle of Skye Highland Dance Group, the actors and actresses of the Dunedin ProArts Drama group, and the Pipers and Drummers of the Scottish Arts music program. You can pick up a. tip or two on tracing your heritage, or perhaps even learn a phrase or two of Gaelic from our Heritage Workshops program!
Please come along and show support for all the students in our program.
The ticket includes a Scottish Meat Pie or Scottish Mac & Cheese Pie and Chips (french fries). The bar will be open and all tickets include a Day Membership to the Scottish American Society of Dunedin.

Screaming Orphans

The Scottish American Society of Dunedin is proud to welcome back the Screaming Orphans to kick off our 2022 series of concerts.

The Screaming Orphans, four sisters from County Donegal, Ireland are a highly talented family and have traveled Europe, America, and Canada, appearing on David Letterman and many other shows. Their 2017 folk album Taproom charted No. 1 on the iTunes World Music Charts and in the Top 10 of Billboard’s World Album Charts. Their 2019 album Life in a Carnival charted on the top 25 of iTunes Pop Music charts in the U.S. and again top 10 of the Billboard World Albums Chart.

Sisters Joan, Grainne, Angela, and Mary Therese will provide us with another amazing night of folk, pop, Celtic and worlds music featuring more songs and ballads “they learned from their Mam!”
