The North Pinellas County Democratic Club will hold its monthly meeting on Thursday, May 18, 2023.  Our in-person meeting will be at the Scottish Cultural Center, 917 Louden Ave in Dunedin. Our May meeting will welcome Joanne “Cookie” Kennedy, who has filed to run for the Pinellas County Commission in District 1 to replace Janet Long.  Kennedy was born and raised in Pinellas County. She has served as Mayor of Indian Rocks Beach for over five years, currently in her third term. She also serves as the vice chair of the Barrier Island Governmental Council.  To quote Kennedy from her press release announcing her candidacy, “We need an authentic person who understands being a small business person, raising a family, putting food on the table, and creating relationships and partnerships that enhance the quality of life for all our citizens.”

Our April meeting will welcome Kelly Clark, the adoption coordinator from Keep Pinellas Beautiful.  Keep Pinellas Beautiful works with volunteers to foster unity and strengthen community bonds through improvement and beautification efforts across Pinellas County.  We will also feature Bryan Beckman to give us some insight and perspective as to what’s been happening with the Clearwater City Council.

·         Fred Hearns, well known in the area as the Tampa Bay History Center Curator and the area’s black history.  The facility has features of the area’s first native inhabitants, Spanish conquistadors, and historical figures who shaped the area.

·         Dustin Chase, Deputy Director of the Pinellas County Supervisor of Elections office, will join us to discuss the changes in voter registration, especially vote-by-mail requirements.

Please join us at our Election Day Watch Party this Tuesday.  The event will be held at the Scottish Cultural Center, 917 Louden Ave in Dunedin (see map below).

  • Doors open at 6:30 pm

Labor Day Weekend Unity Picnic!

The North Pinellas County Democratic Club (NPCDC) and the Greater Tarpon Springs Democratic Club (GTSDC) cordially invite you to our Democratic Labor Day Unity Picnic at Philippe Park!

This event will be held THIS SATURDAY, September 3rd, 2022, from 12:00 PM – 3:00 PM at Philippe Park Shelter #2, located at 2525 Philippe Pkwy, Safety Harbor, FL

Social time begins at 12:00 PM, with lunch served at 12:30 PM.  Our confirmed speakers include:

·         Carlos Guillermo Smith, Florida’s first LGBTQ Latino legislator, FL House District 49, will headline our August meeting.  Rep. Smith will be one of the most dynamic speakers we will have in the run-up to the November general election. He has been a leader against Ron DeSantis’ radical agenda and is a powerhouse in Florida politics.

·         Bernie Fensterwald is a candidate for the new House District 58 State Representative position. Bernie holds a BA degree from Vanderbilt University and a law degree from Tulane University. He is currently Director and Vice-President of U-Store Management Corporation and previously worked for the Federal Trade Commission and was a partner with Fensterwald and Alcorn Professional Company.

We will also have a great opportunity for you to show your support for your Democratic candidates. The Club is contacting many candidates’ campaigns to obtain yard signs.  We will bring those signs to this meeting and hand them out to the attendees while the supply lasts at no charge.  The candidates only ask that you then go to their website and make a donation.

On Thursday, June 16th, the North Pinellas County Democratic Club will be proud to host four (4) unique individuals who will discuss the state of affairs locally and within Florida. Our in-person meeting will be held at the Scottish Cultural Center, 917 Louden Avenue in Dunedin.  The meeting starts with social time at 6:30 pm, followed by the business meeting at 7:00 pm. We’ll provide a Zoom link on June 15 for anyone who wishes to join virtually.  Our guests will be:

  • Amy Weintraub is the Reproductive Rights Program Director for Progress Florida. She chairs the Reproductive Rights Task Force for Florida NOW and has worked most of her adult life identifying, educating, and activating citizens toward social justice.
  • Lacy Hollings is the current Campaign Chair for the Pinellas County Democratic Executive Committee. She is the former District chair for District 65, a graduate of the University of Southern California, and a US Army veteran. She will provide us with information on how we can each become more involved in the 2022 Elections.
  • Allison Miller is a candidate for State Attorney for the 6th Judicial Circuit, which covers Pinellas and Pasco counties.  She has worked as a Public Defender for nearly 15 years after having interned at the US Department of Housing and Urban Development. She has been recognized by the Florida Bar as an expert in criminal trial law. She is an advocate for a more fair criminal justice system in order to decrease community alienation.
  • Carl Zimmermann will begin our rotation of candidates who are running in the non-partisan race for the Pinellas County School Board, Seat 3. Mr. Zimmermann has over 30 years of classroom teaching experience in Pinellas County and was Teacher of the Year six (6) times. In 2003, he was the State of Florida Journalism Teacher of the Year and represented Florida District 65 in the State Legislature from 2012 – to 2014.

This month we are excited to welcome Lauren Frances Book. Lauren is the minority leader of the Florida Senate, a post she has held since April 28, 2021.  She is a former educator who has served as a Democrat in the Florida Senate since 2016, representing parts of Broward County.  Our May meeting will also feature remarks from several candidates for office, as well as updates on timely issues.

On Thursday, April 21st, the North Pinellas County Democratic Club is proud to host three (3) unique individuals who are working in different ways to make life better for our residents.  Our in-person meeting will be held at the Scottish Cultural Center, 917 Louden Ave in DunedinOur meeting starts with social time at 6:30 pm followed by the business meeting at 7:00 pm. We’ll provide a Zoom link on April 20 for those who wish to join virtually. 

  • Rene Flowers is a representative of Be SMART for Kids, a campaign launched to raise awareness about how secure gun storage—storing guns locked, unloaded, and separate from ammunition—can save children’s lives. Be SMART emphasizes that it’s an adult’s responsibility to keep kids from accessing guns and that every adult can play a role in keeping kids and communities safer. The organization was created to bring together responsible adults to reduce both suicides and the number of unintentional shootings that occur when children have access to unsecured firearms.   • Kelly Nelson is the co-founder of the North Pinellas Reproductive Rights Team, now operating as the Tampa Bay Abortion Fund.  Kelly serves with the organization’s advocacy arm, Tampa Bay Access Force, and also sits on the Juvenile Welfare Board North County Community Council.  She will provide an update on abortion rights issues.
  • Jarrod Buchman is the newest member of the Oldsmar City Council.  In the March 2022 municipal elections, Jarrod ran for Oldsmar City Council against a former 2 term mayor and city councilperson. Jarrod won all three precincts, obtaining 55% of the vote in Oldsmar, thereby flipping the city of Oldsmar blue. Upon his swearing-in, Jarrod was appointed to serve as Vice Mayor of Oldsmar. We’re looking forward to hearing from Jarrod about the experience, and his advice for our efforts to elect more Democrats.
