Monday Night is Coffee with the Counselor! – The Journey of Grief

“Tears are the silent language grief” — Voltaire.

In our lives, we will grieve many things: the loss of a beloved family member or friend, a dear pet, the ending of a relationship, and the loss of health or abilities, to name a few. These losses and the grief that comes are natural but a dreaded part of our life.

Please join us as we discuss how grief affects the mind, body, and spirit. We will also look at coping strategies that may help with the healing journey.

Speakers: Winnie Holland, LMHC, and Susan O’Neil, LMHC. Both counselors work at House of Mercy and Encouragement.

Coffee & Conversation with Dolores Coe

It’s Back… It’s LIVE!!!

Hanging out, drinking delicious coffee, talking about art… ahh, that’s the life! Well, that IS the life at least for an hour or so each month at the Dunedin Fine Art Center’s Coffee and Conversation series. Enjoy coffee (Presented by the Sterling Society of DFAC) and insights as each month’s guest holds forth on their expertise. Admission to these relaxed talks is $5 and is FREE to current DFAC members.

The series welcomes artist Dolores Coe. The title of his presentation is Field Notes & Tracks – In & Out of the Studio.

“I live and work on a riverbank, on a fragile coastline of powerful forces: blazing sun and saturated color, deterioration and generation, the randomly abandoned roots that don’t grow deep but spread and intertwine, the flatness, space, and always a horizon line—and endlessly fascinating humans. I work with visual parallels in creating paintings.” – DC.

In this conversation, Florida-based artist Dolores Coe will discuss a selection from her painting series and projects, tracing inspiration and ideas over time and highlighting the evolved processes and explorations. Included will be working from her new series of “child/hood/scapes,” a pandemic-fueled and inspired change. Woven into the mix will be the notion of the pivotal role of that “other thing,” familiar to most artists, that is crucial in informing studio works–and extends outward as a reciprocal, creative force.

For Coe, those “other things” include working along the banks of the Little Manatee River, building by hand a mountain cabin/studio photo documenting “Funky Florida,” poetry, and travel… and balancing her solitary practice in the studio with the privilege of engaging with others extensively in teaching, counseling, and collaborative roles over time, developing arts-based programs in art and non-art endeavors.

DFAC – Coffee & Conversation with Bill Parker

It’s Back… It’s LIVE!!!

Hanging out, drinking delicious coffee, talking about art… ahh, that’s the life! Well, that IS the life at least for an hour or so each month at the Dunedin Fine Art Center’s Coffee and Conversation series. Enjoy coffee (Presented by the Sterling Society of DFAC) and insights as each month’s guest hold forth on their area of expertise. Admission to these relaxed talks is $5 and is FREE to current DFAC members.

The series welcomes artist Bill Parker. The title of his presentation is: Why Plein Air Painting, Unique Experiences, and Challenges.

En plein air is a French expression meaning “in the open air” and refers to the act of painting outdoors with the artist’s subject in full view. Plein air artists capture the spirit and essence of a landscape or subject by incorporating natural light, color, and movement into their works.

Some of the topics he will be discussing will include:

  • In the field…
  • Is it about the landscape?
  • Is it about the environment you’re in?
  • Or is it about the structure you are seeing?
  • My best plein air experience and my worse plein air experience.
  • Taking advantage of your travel and outdoor landscapes.
  • Understanding your tools of the trade.
  • When to sketch, when to paint, and the difference between sketching outdoors and painting outdoors.
  • Getting to the end result faster. Quicker is better. (looser, mark making, and tricks to get to your finished art).
  • Science of observation sketching and painting.
  • Simplification and final touches.
  • Satisfaction of bringing home a finished piece of art.

Bill Parker is a native of Southern New Jersey and now spends his time between his New Jersey home and Dunedin, Fl. He has a BFA from Virginia Commonwealth University in Communications Arts and Design. He and his wife created their own ad agency called Parker and Partners, which grew to the 4th largest agency in the state of New Jersey. After 36 years in the ad agency world, he is now concentrating on the applied arts. He is also the President of the Pastel Society of Tampa Bay and is now a Signature Artist within the society.

So stop by for some Coffee & Conversation. Or call ahead to the Palm Cafe’ (298. DFAC ext 237) and have lunch waiting for you!

Scottish American Society of Dunedin – The Steel City Rovers in Concert

The Scottish American Society of Dunedin is very proud to welcome the Steel City Rovers for the first time to the Scottish Cultural Center. The Steel City Rovers perform dynamic and expressive music, a unique composite of traditional Celtic music and North American styles, including bluegrass, folk, and roots. Their original works touch on issues of love, loss, celebration, and heritage, and they also breathe life into newly-discovered instrumental melodies from as far back as centuries ago.  The Rovers stand out for their powerful, emotive vocals and engaging entertainment.
We have received several endorsements of this band from people like Tommy Byrne of the Byrne Brothers and Colin Farrell of Off Kilter-  “A fantastic band who are wonderful ambassadors of traditional and modern Celtic Music.”

These festivals are a favorite among our locals. Still, they are very popular for our northern state visitors for baseball’s spring training (home of the Blue Jays) and travelers as far as Asia and Europe.

All can enjoy the delicious relationships between food, spirits, shopping, and kids and pets playing at the Dunedin Seafood Festival.
